The only limit is your imagination.
This year of study aims to further equip graduates of our Concept Art Higher Certificate with industry-specific skills, tools and software expertise that will not only speed up workflows, but will add depth and refinement to their portfolios. Students will be encouraged to specialise within a field of film, game or animation, and will have briefs catered towards that specialisation.
Here we aim to level-up all the foundational skills in the fundamentals of perspective, drawing, anatomy and digital painting established in first year, with the ultimate goal of leveraging these skills in design processes. This will help students strengthen the appeal of their character, creature, asset and environment designs, in a targeted, industry-directed fashion.
What will you learn? _
Concept art is a form of illustration commonly used in the film, video game and animation industries to create the first visualisations of ideas before they are put into production. This might be 3D modelling for games, the creation of physical props, costumes or sets in film, or the final art created for animation.
During this programme, we’ll advance your skills in the areas of character, creature, asset and environment design through the incorporation of advanced 3D workflows, dedicated theory weeks, extensive IP-creation and world building, and a diverse range of industry-specific assignments
At the end of the year, students will get to develop their own campaign for their final project and assemble an industry-ready portfolio showcasing their unique talents. By this point students will be able to leverage all the skills gained from their second year of study and improve from their previous years’ campaign design assignment.
Return to the basics. Any good designer knows that before they can advance their technical skill, they must first advance their fundamental skills. Here we will help students align their goals for the year, and teach them advanced tools for executing anatomy anatomy and perspective, as well as build strong understandings of light, colour and rendering processes through digital painting assignments.
Students will be able to chose from their preferred design techniques, from working with line art, using silhouettes or employing the help of 3D tools as frameworks, and use them, in combination with their new fundamental skills, to execute indistry-specific briefs. We encourage students to develop their own effective workflows and styles, while supporting their choices with research and written rationales.
While the skills learnt in concept art lend themselves to related disciplines like illustration, they are more commonly applied in specialised contexts. We’ll teach you how you can focus on your area of choice and how to apply your skills to imagine and develop artwork for use in game design, film, animation and other related industries.
All Academy of Digital Arts programmes are designed with industry-readiness as a primary focus. On graduating from our Concept Art programme, you’ll not only be familiar with the professional environment into which you’ll be heading, you’ll also have the skills, confidence, portfolio and industry contacts to dive into your new career. Additionally, in this year of study, we aim to equip our students with basic skills on the topics of business, taxes, and how to conduct yourself as a professional.
