The only limit is your imagination.

This year of study aims to further equip graduates of our Intermediate Professional Development Programme in Concept Art with industry-specific skills, tools and higher- level critical thinking abilities. These skills will be tested academically, through the execution of a research paper, as well as practically, through the creation of bulk designs within a specialized area of concept art.

Students are encouraged to become experts within a refined area of the filed, and develop the knowledge, workflows and skills required to design within that area as effectively as possible, and to the highest standards.

What will you learn? _

Concept art is a form of illustration commonly used in the film, video game and animation industries to create the first visualisations of ideas before they are put into production. This might be 3D modelling for games, the creation of physical props, costumes or sets in film, or the final art created for animation.

During this course, students will be taught how to combine intelligent, critical thought, with the filed or art and design. Conducting research into a chosen area, not only develops the ability to construct and analise ideas into formal, academic language, but advances problem-solving and depth of concepts that inspire designs.

By the end of the year students will combine their newfound knowledge
gained through research with their design abilities, with the ultimate goal of
executing a industry-orientated pitch, complete with accompanying
concepts, mock-ups and graphics

Practice Based Research

Students will be guided through the process of conducting academic research throughout the course of the year. While this research is text based-it will be fueled and supported by the creation of art and orientated towards the ultimate goal of furthering the knowledge-base of the Concept Art industry.

Work-Integrated Learning

Students will have the opportunity to refine their specialised styles, workflows and area of expertise by taking advantage of the very self- directed nature of this programme. Lecturing staff will always be there to support and direct efforts, but this year aims to allow students to develop the ability to direct and manage their own learning and time in a way that facilitates continuous learning and self-study after the completion of the programme.

Specialisation

While the skills learnt in concept art lend themselves to related disciplines like illustration, they are more commonly applied in specialised contexts. We’ll teach you how you can focus on your area of choice and how to apply your skills to imagine and develop artwork for use in game design, film, animation and other related industries.

Industry Readiness

All Academy of Digital Arts courses are designed with industry-readiness as a primary focus. On graduating from our Concept Art course, you’ll not only be familiar with the professional environment into which you’ll be heading, you’ll also have the skills, confidence, portfolio and industry contacts to dive into your new career.
