Embrace the world of multimedia and interactive design.

Whether it’s websites and mobile apps or online shopping and user interfaces, we all know there’s no avoiding the digital world these days. Technology and digital interaction influence every part of our lives, and have made digital designers and developers highly sought-after, both locally and internationally.

Happily, this also gives creative students with technically-orientated, analytical minds the opportunity to explore both sides of their personalities in a well-established, and growing, industry.

The full time Web Design and Development course at the Academy of Digital Arts gives you the chance to enter this arena from the perspective of front-end web design and development. Taught and mentored by lecturers still very
active in the industry, this course sees you crafting concepts, digital creations and websites in full interactivity leveraging both theoretical training and practical application.

So, if you’re passionate about starting a creative career that puts your technical abilities to the test, or are interested in building websites and interactive content that function seamlessly and look incredible, this is the course for you!

What will you learn? _

When it comes to front-end web design and development, those able to combine creative and technical skills are worth their weight in gold!

This course is designed to help you develop that magical combination by integrating the nitty-gritty of coding and interaction design with conceptual know-how and a great eye for layout and design.

And, as the digital fields are always evolving and expanding, we’ll make sure you’re well versed in staying up to date on industry standard tools, tricks and procedures and have all the problem-solving skills you need to become a life-long learner!

Conceptualisation
& Design Thinking

Front-end digital design is about more than just attractive layouts and functional code. As with any of the creative fields, you need to have a solid, dynamic concept, purpose and plan of action behind what you’re producing to communicate the right message to the right audience. We’ll train you in these theories and processes, and make sure you practice them until they become second nature.

Design Elements
& Principles

No matter which area of development you excel at, having good design and layout skills is fundamental for a front-end web designer (particularly if you choose to specialise in UI design!). This is the domain of typography, colour, imagery, graphic elements and flow of information, all used to make your websites visually attractive and engaging. You’ll receive instruction throughout the year to help you flourish in this area.

Technical &
Practical Skills

As digital technologies are constantly changing, a foundation in coding, troubleshooting and life-long learning skills are essential if you’re going to be able to grow and adapt over the course of your web career. We’ll teach you all the fundamental theories, principles and software you need, as well as the practical skills to confidently build seamless, standards-compliant websites. You’ll start with HTML & CSS and responsive design, moving on to JavaScript and Content Management Systems in WordPress, and learn a few essential video editing skills as well.

Industry Readiness

No Academy of Digital Arts course would be complete without us fulfilling our promise to focus on making our students industry-ready. You’ll be taught by lecturers still active in the field, who will help you understand the necessary procedures and processes used in the workplace, and teach you those vital ‘soft skills’ that you’ll need to professionally interact with clients and colleagues.

Note: Upon completion of this course you will be awarded the Higher Certificate in Web Publishing and Interactive Media, NQF-level 5 (SAQA ID 88182, HEQSF-aligned, H/PR432/E003CAN, 152 Credits).
